SAFE SPACE: A QUEER SPELL-MANIFESTO

The installation, Safe Space, is an artistic response to the growing wave of discriminatory bills and escalating violence against LGBTQ+ individuals globally. It seeks to reclaim and reimagine spiritual and ritualistic symbols as forms of resistance, resilience, and care for a community under threat. By creating a sacred queer space, the installation confronts the systemic forces of marginalization while offering a vision of empowerment and solidarity.

Central to the work are 11 large images:  photographs printed on fabric and acrylic paintings, each depicting protective figures inspired by divine and saint-like iconography. These guardians, imagined within a queer framework, embody protection against the societal and institutional forces that attempt to erase LGBTQ+ lives. The scale of these images emphasizes their significance, allowing viewers to engage deeply with their presence as symbols of strength, solidarity, and spiritual resistance.

Accompanying the large images are smaller, wallet-sized estampitas—a nod to the Spanish traditional Catholic religious prints used for personal devotion and protection. Reimagined through a queer lens, the estampitas carry specific prayers addressing challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community, written in Spanish and English.
